Supermoon photography

Tonight was a really interesting evening for those who love observing or photographing the Moon. It was passing by with lowest radius since the year 1948 and thus is the largest since then. I was really excited when I heard about this yesterday and knew I had to take some photos myself.

The so-called „supermoon“ reached its closest point located some 365,500 km from the Earth in the outer space. That is the smallest distance in the last 69 years. It was 14% larger and about 30% brighter than average. The term „supermoon“ means that a full moon occurs when the Moon is located at its perigee,  a spot on its eliptical trajectory closest to the Earth and thus making it significantly brighter and larger. It was computed that the next supermoou will occur on November 25 2034.

I have tried photographing the Moon several times since I got my camera and I captured several pretty nice photos, but they were al really small. Sadly don’t have that good photography gear to create as breathtaking photos as seen around the internet throughout the weekend but I still wanted to try for to see how difficult it really is. You can find what camera and lenses I own in the About me section. Last night however changed the game for me. You can see for yourself how (or if) I was successful.

If you want to know more about this event, I may recommend reading this Telegraph post or this Wikipedia article.
